Many early residents were farmers who raised cotton, cattle, pigs and horses; some also mined coal until World War I when oil production began to increase in nearby Fort Worth In 1907 construction began on what would become America's first concrete commercial building - the First National Bank Building -and numerous other businesses followed suit during ensuing years as railroads extended their lines into town through two stations built adjacent to each other just east of Main Street: Depot Road (now US 75) served as a transportation hub for both passengers and goods; Railroad Avenue served as an artery linking residential areas with business districts along Railroad Avenue or Market Street westward towards DowntownDallas The growth potential represented by this new commerce largely generated self-employment with few if any entrepreneurs coming together to form an enterprise such as a grocery store or brewery because there was no market demand for these type of ventures at that point By 1930 only 2% of Azle's civilian population worked in industry while 90% resided within its agricultural sector
