Bay City is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Bexar County. As of 2010, the population was 25,644. The city's economy is based on manufacturing, transportation, and services. Bay City is home to Pier 1 Imports Inc., which manufactures seafood items including lobster and crab legs; American Can Company; and Gulf Freight Railway Company.

Bay City began as a stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail in 1853 and became an agricultural center after oil discoveries were made there in 1901. The city was founded by German immigrants, who named it "Baumstadt" (BroomTown). The first post office in Bay City opened on November 6, 1853, under the name of Heidelberg. In 1860, Bay City became incorporated as a town when its citizens voted to incorporate. The first Mayor of Bay City was John Ebert.On December 10th 1850, Samuel Morse built the first telegraph line between Nauvoo IL and San Francisco CA

Bay City, Texas is a small city located in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land area of Texas. The population was 21,859 at the 2010 census. Bay City is one of the oldest cities in Texas and has been around since 1836. The city was named for James Bay, who was the first white settler in what is now Bay City. Prior to that, it was known as San Augustine de la Bahia. In 1865, William Kirby built Kirby's Block on what is now Alvarado Street in Bay City. In 1887, Edwin Gentry founded Gentry's Hardware Store on Main Street in Bay City. In 1909, John Lyle opened Lyle's Newsstand on Elm Street in Bay City. In 1912, Albert Fenton opened Fenton's grocery store on Fourth Avenue in BayCity. After World War I ended, many U.S.-owned businesses closed throughout the United States and much of this happened in Bay City; however, some businesses such as J & W Smith continued to operate until they were acquired by Texaco Incorporated later that year. In 1930s and 1940s most of the business activity took place at Fifth and Elm Streets which became known as "the old downtown". A new downtown development began to take shape starting around 1950 when several larger businesses moved into buildings along Elm Street including a bank (Houston National Bank) and an insurance agency (United American Insurance). Today part of downtown still retains its Original Business District feel with large stores such as Quicken Loans Inc., Hobby Lobby Stores Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation and more mixed into smaller shops/cafes like Primitive Pizza Company and Jimmy Johns Jr.. In 2006 local historian Donny Thompson wrote an excellent book about bay city history called "Bay Cities: The History of Five Places"
Bay City, Texas was founded in 1836 by General Zachary Taylor and was named for Bay City, Michigan. The town grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers from Illinois and other eastern states during the early 1800s. After a brief stint as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, Bay City became an important railroad junction in central Texas. The city's growth continued throughout the 19th century, with construction of massive mills and businesses boom that created a large number of local residents. However, by World War I Bay City had all but disappeared as a result of the war-related travel restrictions placed on the area by America's main allies. Although its population has remained small ever since, Bay City remains an important center for economic development in central Texas.
