Beaumont is a city located in Beaumont County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beaumont County. The city is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Beaumont began as an agricultural community established in 1836 by James Fenton and others to supply settlers with food while they explored the Lone Star State. By 1840, it had developed into a small town with over one thousand residents. In 1881, Beaumont merged with seven other towns in Houston County to formHouston County Annexation District No. 2 which included much of what is now Beaumont and portions of Pasadena and Clearwater counties. In 1907, Mayor Edward Muther proposed that bullets be made from lead-alloy for law enforcement purposes as alternatives to copper or brass due to their low cost and faster shipping times than those metals. He received approval from the City Council and started manufacturing bullets at his company on Elm Street until World War I when all bullet production ended because of wartime restrictions on materials sources. When World War II began, Beaumont's share of munitions output skyrocketed as industries turned towards munitions for war Production stopped again after 1945 due to post-war prohibitions against new material production being placed onerous by both countries following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which took place a few years earlier
