In 1861, John Wesley Dodd published the book "The Life of John Wesley Dodd," which chronicled his expeditions across the southern United States. When the railroad came through Bellaire in 1887, James Hogg built a sawmill and store near present day Loop 410 and West Main Street. A post office called Ridge was established in 1888, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1902 Samuel Fenton donated 5 acres (2 ha) to the city of Austin for use as a park. The Fenton Park District was created from this donation and has since developed into one of the most significant parks in Austin with over 100 acres (40 ha). In 1907 Harry Dyer opened his grocery store at 711 W Payne Ave., one of the earliest businesses west of Houston along I-10. The store became known as Dyer's Department Store and continued to operate until 1984 when it closed because its proprietor died without leaving an heir apparent. In 1914 Vida Cunningham married Wiley Ellington who had immigrated from Alabama two years earlier. They moved to Bellaire where they started their own home-based business selling chocolates before ultimately moving to Dallas where Vida started her own cosmetics company same name later renamed L'oreal Corporation . Wiley Ellington passed away aged 96 in 2002; Vida died aged 93 on December 12th 2006 after many long years fighting ovarian cancer . Their son William Averett Ellington III succeeded them as Owner/President of Dyers Chocolate & Confections Incorporated

However, by 1850 only 500 people lived in Bellaire while production of cotton continued to decline in Texas due to an inability to find markets for its product. By 1857 all but 75 residents had left for other parts of Texas because of poor economic conditions in Bellaire.
