Borger is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. Borger is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The economy of Borger is based on agriculture and ranching. The first settlement in what became Medina County was made by pioneers who began to arrive in 1845. They were led by John Fenton and James Sitton. In 1849, a group of settlers known as the "Cotton Kings" moved from Arkansas to what would become Medina County because they believed that cotton could be grown hereabouts. Cotton farming was not popular in Texas at that time; it required too much labor and capital investment for farmers to succeed. But when the railroads came through and brought new markets for cotton, farmers started to prosper. By 1900, there were more than 100 businesses in town with a payroll greater than $100,000 per year! In 1902, Boisehard Calkins established himself as a rancher and farmer in what would become Medina County. He became well-known for his high-quality cattle and horse breeding operations which he ran until his death in 1978. His son Lasse Calkins continued the business after his father's death until its closure in 1984. Today, many of Boisehard Calkins' descendants still operate their ranching businesses throughout northwest Texas including parts of Medina County!

Borger is a small, rural town located in Johnson County, Texas. It was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Borger and his wife Hannah. The Borgers were the first residents of what is now Johnson County. At the time, it was part of Mexico. In 1848, Nicholas Borger moved to Texas and started a farm here. He also built a log cabin which served as the town's first courthouse. The original courthouse was destroyed in 1865 by Union troops during the American Civil War. However, the building still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1860, Nicholas Borger married Sarah Jane Houstoun and they began to take on more responsibility for their community. They also built two other homes in town- one for themselves and one for their families. In 1870, Sarah Jane Borger died and Nicholas Borger continued to build homes until his death in 1893. After his death, Mrs.Houstoun took over building operations until her own death in 1916- leaving behind an unfinished task that still needs to be completed: The replacement of the original red brick schoolhouse that served as the town's elementary school from 1836-1860!
