Borger, Texas is a census-designated place (CDP) in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. The CDP covers an area of 7 square miles (21 km²). The Borger community began as a small farming village situated on the Brazos River about east of what is now Borger. A post office was established at Borger on November 5, 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on April 15, 1871. In 1868 a sawmill and gristmill were built within the present boundaries of BorGER; these mills remain in use today. In 1870 John Hargrave organized a store and hotel at Borger; this business continued until 1901. In 1907 the first school opened in BorGER; this school remains in use today. In 1916 two enterprising citizens erected a one-story frame garage at what is now Fourth Street & Park Avenue; this garage continues to be used by the town government to house some municipal offices today. In 1928 Wirt Sorenson developed land northeast of downtown GorGER for A&P meatpacking companies purposes; this development led to the erection of an apartment complex known as The Village that still stands across from GorGER Community Center today.
