Brenham's history dates back to 1876 when it was named for Olin W. Brenham, an American lawyer and politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Texas from 1911 to 1913 and 1916 to 1918. The first post office in Brenham opened on December 12, 1876. The present courthouse was built in 1906 and replaced a structure that had been destroyed by a tornado in 1908. In 1932, the city council voted to rename the city after Olin Wernher Brenham again, this time for his entire life achievement rather than just his political career. In 1957, it was renamed again - this time for Loren Easley, who had been elected governor of Texas two years earlier that year and became one of the most controversial governors in recent history due to his policies such as supporting Interstate Highway 10 (I-10). In 1978, Brenham married its last female resident when Rosie Crouch moved from Arlington to live here with her husband and children after being accepted into Baylor University's Women's Studies Program; prior to that she had resided in Richardson pending acceptance into Baylor which would have allowed her access to scholarships unavailable to women at other universities at the time. In 1984 Gail Price made national headlines when she won $1 million worth of cattle auctions held by Texaco off Interstate 35 near Brenham during what has come be called "the longest running cattle drive in United States history". The current mayor is Donny Lee Jones with term expiring on February 14th 2020
