Brownwood is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Brownwood is located in west-central Hudspeth County and east of downtown Houston. The history of Brownwood begins with settlers coming from Illinois in 1836 and 1837. They founded what became known as "the village." In 1860, John Waddell donated land to become a town square and began construction on what would become the first courthouse in Texas. The first post office was established in 1865 and the first school opened in 1870. The growth of Brownwood wasdue to its location on US highway 6 which made it easy for people to get around and bring goods home from far away. In 1902, John Dickey donated $10,000 for a library which would serve all of Hudspeth County including Brownwood. This new library quickly became one of the most popular local attractions with its collection of over 350 books including rare volumes from Europe and Japan. In 1907, another donation led to the establishment of an agricultural society which provided support for local farmers through marketing their products and providing education about soil health and farming methods. Today, this society still exists as part of the community center programming block called "Old Time Agriculture". Waddell Dam was completed along US Highway 6 towards present day Brownsville in 1941 giving birth to Clear Lake right near where Brownwood now stands - making it one of only two major lakes entirely within Hudspeth County! Today there are many businesses based out of Brownsville that rely heavily on Clear Lake as their primary source water supply! Brownood also played an important role during World War II with its production assistance program known as "New Start". This program awarded contracts to companies who were willing to set up plants specifically designed for war production such as aircraft factories Naval Aircraft Corporation (NAC) Willowbrook Airport & Shipyards Harrisburg shipyard; Munson Paper Company San Antonio; Steel Dynamics Corp Beaumont; Consolidated Coal Co Amarillo; Texaco Inc Houston Ship Channel Terminal; Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation Houston Astrodome).

Brownwood was founded in 1876 by James W. Brown and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the Native American tribe of the same name who live near where it is now located. The first store in Brownwood opened in 1878. By 1886, there were six businesses in the town and a population of over 150 people. In 1916, Brownwood became the county seat of Harris County and soon thereafter began to experience growth as a result of its increased importance within county government. Development throughout the early 21st century caused much urban sprawl within Brownwood, which has resulted in some residential streets losing their streetlights and other infrastructure not keeping up with advances in technology; however, these conditions have been slowly improve over time as city ordinances have been rewritten to reflect current trends in housing development and infrastructure needs. The James W. Brown Museum & Library is open to the public from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday, 9am-4pm Saturday, 12pm-5pm Sunday (closed Mondays), and 10am-4pm Monday thru Thursday inside the Main Library building on East Houston Street between First Street and Second Street; also open during special events such as holiday seasons (such as Christmas) at 11am or 1pm when doors open until 4 pm outside on East Houston Street between First Street and Second Streets
