Bryan, Texas is a small town in the state of Texas located about eighty miles east of Dallas. The population was 5,841 at the 2010 census. Bryan is the home to Baylor University and Mitchell University, both large research universities. The main industry in the city until recently was agriculture but now there are several small businesses including real estate agents, car dealerships, restaurant chains and information technology companies among others. Bryan’s rich history can be traced back to its early days as a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. A community called “Henderson” was established near present-day Bryan in 1846 by Methodists led by Revd James Henderson who named it for his friend General John Henderson who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant’s division during the Mexican War (1846-1848).
