In 1933, it merged with the adjacent town of North Richland Hills to form a new city government. The merger was made possible by the creation of a new county seat for Midland County which became Arlington after general election results showed that North Richland Hills had outpolled Burleson by more than three thousand votes. At first, all burley residents were forced to move into Arlington but this soon became impossible as most residents of both towns were already living there before they moved to Burleson. In 1942, during World War II,burlesons hometown hero Sam Houston donated land to create an air base which would become one of the largest in the country called Hobby Airport. Today's building housing Hobby Airports headquarters remains largely unchanged from when it opened in 1941 and has been designated a Texan Heritage Property by the Texas Historical Commission. Burleson is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Antonio County. The city was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836 as a small community called " Burleson". In 1839, it became the first town in San Antonio County. The name derives from French Canadian settlers who named it after Pierre-André Burlew (1768–1832), an officer with the French forces that fought against Mexico during the Mexican War of Independence. The present spelling of the name was first given to Burleson by James Fenton in 1879 when he moved his family to San Antonio from Austin and took up land east of Interstate 35 near what is now downtown Burleson. In 1881, John Hildebrandt bought 160 acres (65 ha) southeast of present day downtown Burleson from José de Jesús García and established what would become known as Hildebrandt Ranch LLC. This ranch ran for over 50 years until finally being sold to Don Josefina Gomez y Sánchez on January 17, 2006 for $3 million. On October 5th 2006 City Council voted 3-2 to annex part of Zaragoza Heights which lies within City limits but contains no water or sewer services despite annexation requests from several residents for years prior thereto because Zaragoza Heights has been zoned rural since 1924 without any plans or retroactive effects to serve residents within City Limits! With this vote annexation became official and Zaragoza Heights will be annexed into the city proper effective immediately! Burleson was founded in 1836 by John Burleson and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who helped to win the Mexican-American War. In 1845, the town became a county seat of Bell County. In 1911, it incorporated as a city. The population peaked at over 60,000 in 1940, but has since declined significantly.
