In 1886, Harry Hahn constructed a sawmill on White Oak Creek that began operations producing lumber for local homes and businesses. For many years this mill functioned as the only source of lumber for most homes in the community; however, it closed its doors in 1984 due to decline in demand for wood products statewide. During World War II, Burleson played an important role as a remote airfield serving as home base for Allied forces flying over North America during both world wars (the country's only wartime airport). Many buildings still stand from these days including barracks used by Air Force personnel during World War II as well as hangars used by Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes when they were built at nearby Grumman Aeronautical Systems plant during that war which also continued intoift today at Wichita State University's Aerial Limnology Laboratory adjacent to IHOP restaurant next door housing Research Aircraft Restoration Department related exhibits from various WWII era aircraft).
