Canyon, Texas is a small town in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The population was 905 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Starr County and Nueces County. The name Canyon comes from the Chontal word "can" which means "hill." The town was founded in 1911 by businessmen John Waddell and J.N. Watkins. In 1925, it became an incorporated city with a population of 1,500 people. By 1978, Canyon had declined to its present size due to emigration and ranching by cattle ranchers and their families. However, during the 1990s significant efforts were made to revive the economy by creating jobs in information technology, publishing, manufacturing and other businesses local to Canyon. Today much of what once constituted Canyon's agricultural sector has been replaced by housing development near Interstate 10 or Mexico City; however some farmers still manage fields within miles of where they live or work. Some residents continue ranching activities including raising horses for meat andlivestock production; while others commute into larger metropolitan areas for work opportunities east of I-10 or west of Dallas/Fort Worth airport

In 1984, the US Department of Justice charged three people with using tasers on an off-duty police officer in Illinois. The officer was killed and two others were injured.
Canyon is located in Paint Rock County, Texas and has a population of just over 3,000. The area that now makes up Canyon was first populated by the Kiowa and Arapaho Indians. In 1827, James Harker and his party of six men were the first white people to visit Canyon. They built a campsite on the banks of the Rio Grande about a mile from where it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. In 1829, John Wesley Powell discovered and named canyon after this spot. The town of Canyon had its start in 1907 when an oil well was drilled near by. However, it wasn't until 1915 that Canyon became a city Limits town. For many years, Canyon was known for its high quality wines which are still enjoyed today. The town also produced fruit crops such as grapes and apples. There are several museums located within or nearby canyon including the Museum of American Indian Arts and Culture (Arapaho), Texas State Historical Association Museum ( Kiowa), Park ranger station (Powell), Valley View High School (Cherokee) and San Antonio Missions National Historic Site ( mission).
Canyon began as a post office in 1876. It was renamed Canyon City in 1909, and became a city in 1928.
