The current mayor is Tyrone Cunningham Jr., who has served since 2011 after being elected to succeed retiring mayor Rick Rhoades. Cunningham comes from a long line of mayors including his father Tyrone Cunningham Sr., who served from 1984 to 1991 and was also Mayor of Cibolo before that.

Cibolo, Texas is a town in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo–New Braunfels–Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cibolo was founded in 1887 by Methodist missionaries. The town grew up around a post office and store that were built on the current site of the high school and other civic buildings. The first post office was established in 1887, and the store opened in 1888. In 1908, Cibolo also had its own telephone company. In 1915-16, Cibolo became one of several Texas towns to join together to form the Amarillo Municipal Airport District (AMAD). At that time it was one of only a few airports within Amarillo metropolitan area. In 1951-52 when Amarillo metropolitan area expanded southward into adjacent counties, Cibolo became one of three localITIES within AMAD which continued to serve as their airport district seat even after their incorporation into neighboring counties’ authorities; this anomalous situation ended when all three localITIES incorporated into larger municipalities on December 14, 1954 effective with the admission of Red River Valley into Amarillo city limits on November 16 following an election landslide victory by Mayor Waddell Henson over Fielding Ladd for City Councilman position vacated by him upon his election as Mayor pro tempore six weeks earlier due to term limitsimposed upon him by then City councilmember Arthur Achatz pursuant to section 3(a) (1) (B) of chapter 706 Statutes Of 1912 amendible thereto due process thereof), notwithstanding section 3(a)(2) (B) thereof providing for annexation or consolidation by ordinance or resolution duly adopted by both City councils prior thereto; ultimately because much preferability has been given since commencement of Airport District services at present day airport location some land adjoining existing AMAD boundaries has been leased fromvarious landowners who have agreed not to object to annexation or consolidation should such be desired
In 1836, Antonio L. Cibolo was granted a land grant by the Republic of Texas. The land included present-day Cibolo County and extended to the east in what is now Hardin County. It was named for Cibolo Creek, which ran through the area. The first post office at Cibolo was established in 1837, and continued in operation until 1865. In 1872, a railroad was built through the county and it became part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Railway system. The population of Cibolo grew rapidly after being made an independent county in 1907. However, during World War II, many residents served in the military or were drafted; this caused some growth slowdown later on when housing costs increased postwar.
