Cleburne is a town in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Uvalde County. The town was founded in 1872 by Austin and Nathan Cleburne as part of the Cleburne Rancho Tejon grant. The name was chosen to honor General Sam Houston's Creek Indian battle victory over Spanish troops at San Jacinto Heights on October 6, 1836. In 1907, the town site was moved from its original location near Clear Fork River to its current location about two miles east of downtown Cleburne on State Highway 127. In 1915, local resident John Witherspoon built and operated the first store in Cleburne. Witherspoon became known for his popular "Witherspoon's Lunch" sandwich which featured ham and American cheese inside a slice of toast with mayonnaise and pickles on either side. In addition to his lunch stand, Witherspoon also co-owned a general store that opened in 1917 next door to his restaurant. In 1922, local resident Homer Hays established an insurance company called Hays & Hays Insurance Company which became one of the largest insurance companies in Texas before merging with Allstate Corporation in 1984. In 1927, local attorney Art McGee opened what is now known as McGee Law Offices located across from the old bank building on Main Street in downtown Cleburne which became one of the most prominent legal firms in Southwest Texas until it closed doors in1999 due to financial problems). In 1956, local resident Roy Lantz donated land north of Main Street for use as a community park; today known as Lantz Park (named for him). The park features baseball diamonds/pits/fields/, soccer fields/soccer players' benches/, playgrounds/and an amphitheater/. On July 22nd 1916 Clyde Gentry (a World War I veteran) married Nannie Mae Fenton at First Baptist Church south of town while 500 people watched via live stage performance by Joplin Chorus under clear sky conditions (. Disciples Baptist Church still stands today) . On September 4th 1946 Clyde Gentry fathered twin boys - Darrell Gentry Jr., born December 3rd 1948 and Donnie Gentry born February 15th 1950 - both who attended high school here until their graduation from college.. After serving 2 terms as Mayor of Cleburne following funeral services for Harvey Dornan (our previous mayor who had passed away less than 1 year earlier), Lorenzo Bebbington took office effective November 14th 1978 having been elected unopposed during special election held that day following Dornan's death . After serving 3 terms he retired after 43 years service herein . He had been preceded by Elmer Chavez who served just over 2 years before leaving office on January 20th 1952 citing health reasons

The first post office opened in 1851 and the first school was built in 1857. In 1909, the name was changed to Cleburne to honor General James A. Cleburne who had fought in both World Wars and had been awarded several honorary titles including Commander of the Legion of Honor by President Theodore Roosevelt.
