Clute, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Austin and about 30 miles (48 km) south of Dallas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,521. The Clute ZIP Code is 86536.The name "Clute" originated from one of several places in central Texas called "Crooked Creek." In 1847, James A. Clute founded the town on land that he had purchased from the Texan Tom Hernando de Soto near what is now Marshall County, TX. The original town site was located at what is now Clute-on-the-Hill Road and Crooked Creek Boulevard. In 1875, a post office was established at Clutcheon and mail continued to be delivered via Stagecoach Line Wagons until 1907 when it became an express office with a post office box at 6100 FM 1428 in nearby Georgetown. On April 15, 1912, voters approved organized township government for Clutcheon Township which included seven unincorporated communities: Cedar Hill (later Cedar Ridge), Damascus Hills (later Addison Hills), Dutch Elmwood (later Elmwood Springs), Garnet Valley (now Green Oaks), Hutchinson Park (now Hutchinsonville), Oak Cliff Heights/Downtown/Broadway and Rolling Prairie/East Side/West Side which formed part of then Rockwall County addition to Galveston County on November 3rd 1916. In 1949 Rockwall County was abolished and its lands merged into Arlington County so that Arlington had all of Galveston's plus Clear Lake and parts of Houston proper including Post Oak Cemetery - making it one large city! Today there are few if any remnants remaining from when Cluter Town had more than 10,000 residents! On October 20th 1898 local farmer James Fenton platted 4 square miles northward along present day US Highway 183 known as Fenton Ranch Land Grant No 2 or White Settlement Land Claim No 1 as well as 5 square miles westward on present day Farm to Market Road 620 between modern day Soaktowne Shopping Center eastbound just past FM 1960 & westbound just past US Highway 183 where he named his new settlement after himself JAMES A CLUTE SETTLEMENT OF TEXAS located adjacent to Crooked Creek Bridge over Crooked Creek near current day Municipal Street intersection just inside the Bubble Gum Factory property line (& future planned development). This area would become known as Fenton’s City Limits today! The first postmaster for this new community was Wm Hargrave who served from October 20th 1898 until May 1899; D C Whitman who served from May 1899 until January 1901; John P Kaufman who served from January 1901 until July 1902; Emmett J Kline who served from July 1902 until December 1903; Hiram L Rankin who served from December 1903 until February 1904; Alfred N Becker who served until his death on February 24th 1904 & George P Smith who served until his death on March 12th 1905! All were men! All eight trustees were elected by lotteries with each trustee casting two votes - one for himself and one against any other candidate! The first election took place on November 3rd 1916 & all but two trustees were reelected!! ensuing term lengths were three years with no break!! A fire destroyed most of downtown Clune while riots occurred between 1915-1920!!!
