Clute, Texas is a small town located in Wise County, Texas. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Clute were farmers who arrived in 1836. A hospital opened on campus of Park Elementary School in 1948 which served as both a maternity hospital and pediatric wing for local hospitals during that time period before closing down again during the early 1990s due to budget cuts within Wise County government%. In 1957, voters approved a referendum asking if they should secede from Wise County because they felt their taxes were too high. Clute is a town inood in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Clute River. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded by Hernando De Soto and his family in 1836 as "New Madrid". New Madrid had been a small trading post on the river near present-day Clute. In 1837, after Fort Worth went into existence, De Soto set out for San Antonio with his army to take possession of what he thought would be Texas's future capital. When they reached Round Rock—the current site of Austin—De Soto ordered his men not to destroy or loot any buildings there but began to build himself a military garrison and station cannon on Round Rock Hill (now two blocks east of Main Street). As time passed and Mexican forces advanced into Texas, De Soto realized that he needed an anchorage from which to defend his new territory and so built an artificial island on the river called Isla de los Reyes (Island of The Kings), which still exists today as Willis Island Park. In 1840, following Mexico's independence from Spain, Texans voted to secede from Mexico and form their own government under Governor Manuel Micheltorena, who appointed David Lloyd Garrison as America's first commissioner for Indian Affairs. Garrison soon discovered that many settlers were living improperly off public land grants given them by President James Kountz--an emblematic act because all public land west of the Arkansas River belonged then exclusively to Mexicans. In 1844-45 Garrison organized a group of white men called The Rangers to confiscate unauthorized homesteads along the Llano Estacado (Lone Stargrass Prairie)—a campaign that eventually led to larger settlements such as Clute being developed around it instead of scattered among Mexican holdings like New Madrid had been before its incorporation into Texarkana County in 1848). Clute was platted in 1850 by Samuel Denton Jr., one of Garrison's Rangers; it was named for him because he owned most of its lots including Isla de los Reyes—the now extinct island mentioned earlier.
