Conroe is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, Conroe had a population of 8,182. The first European to visit Conroe wasCaptain James Cook on his third voyage around America in 1778. He named it "Easter Island" after his ship's captain who had recommended the name for the place. In 1836, John Hogg and four other Texans founded what is now known as Hogg School District No. 7 in Conroe after purchasing land from David Waddell near present day Cypress Creek Parkway and FM 1960 North. They were soon joined by others and within two years they had established themselves as a self-sufficient community with their own stores, churches, schools and jail. A post office was established at Conroe in 1839 and mail arrived from San Antonio until railroads improved transportation within Texas which made shipping goods possible then mail arrived twice weekly from Houston until 1943 when local service ended due to World War II bombings that destroyed much of downtown Houston . Texas Agricultural University (now Texas Tech University) was founded by George Washington Dallas in 1907 located on property donated by Mrs. Sarah Goodloe Perry who also endowed an Observatory at TCU which still operates today with various astronomical observations including: Harlow Shapley telescope;also built Astrodome for baseball games;and building which houses current science laboratories such as The Molecular Biology Laboratory operated by UT Austin In 1925 Drs Emmet J O’Donnell (Baytown), Wilbur Fenton Howe (Tomball), Virgil Kossuth(Houston)and Prentice Goudreau (Conroe) organized Medical Association of TX under auspices of Royal Baylor College of Medicine where members currently practice medicine including Cardiology/Aortic aneurysm surgery/heart transplantation services together with Emergency Department Services providing primary care to thousands of patients each year through our affiliation with Harris County Hospital Authority adjacent to Rice University campus across FM 1960 north from IH 35W exits 4 & 5

One of the earliest settlements in what is now Conroe was made by Native Americans following their exploration of what is now Fort Bend County. In 1836, settlers from Missouri arrived in this region, followed by Texans in 1839. In 1845, lead prospector John Denton discovered oil reserves along Utopia Creek in present-day Conroe. The discovery led to an influx of miners and entrepreneurs who established businesses such as cattle drives, flour mills and other farming enterprises. By 1860, cotton had become the primary crop grown hereabouts; however, railroad transportation linked Conroe with otherHouston Counties during this period for local commerce rather than shipping goods overland from various points around Lake Jackson or Galveston Bayou. In 1865-1866 new Comanche Indians were removed from their reservation east of Houston by General Grant’s army during Indian Removal Act efforts that aimed to extinguish all Indian tribes within reach of white settlement east of Oklahoma Territory (later known as Texas). This event helped spur development around Sam Houston Parkway within present-day Conroe while also creating valuable land holdings for those affected including ranchers Humble & Co., J.P.'s Warehouse Company and others interested in developing irrigated agriculture underlying ancient limestone hillslopes deep inside Central Texas mountainside—a process that would take many years yet produces some extraordinary landscapes today: rolling Plains grasslands broken only occasionally by ponderosa pine forests; vast stretches dominated by huge sycamores or live Oaks shading gassedampa soils; towering limestone outcrops crowned abruptly by flat mountain summits bordered on both sides respectively by water tables so deep they are still observable from open highways just below surface level; suddenly dropping into canyons where rivers flow for more than 500 miles before emerging again onto more Level ground at crossings which served not only as water stops but also villages until recently when automobiles began displacing people as principal means for travel these days—all set against rural counties whose populations have barely increased since World War II let alone since most people left everything behind when war ended In 1924 Tom Flanders opened Flanders' Chinese restaurant on Main Street adjacent to the Sam Houston Parkway across from what is now ExxonMobil headquarters (the original structure remains)—the first Chinese business licensed outside China excepting Hong Kong which opened its first store in 1911.—At one time there were over 2200 Chinese merchants active throughoutTexas including 300+ stores providing employment opportunities to 1 million workers.—Today few if any remain but some operate tourist attractions like Cantonese Gardens where traditional Opera performances are given each night beginning at 6pm.; reopened fall 2018 after extensive renovation/restoration funded largely through private donation
On October 3, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army marched into Texas to join forces with the Federal Union army under Abraham Lincoln. The Battle of Conroe was fought in central Texas and resulted in a Confederate victory.
