Copperas Cove is located on the Gulf of Mexico just south of Corpus Christi and east of Galveston Island. The earliest mention of Copperas Cove comes from 1851 when Captain John Rodgers established a trading post there. The first settler to live in what became Copperas Cove was Alexander Cook who arrived in 1853. Cook's family owned and operated the Cooke Trading Post until 1863 when they sold it to A.F. Haughton who renamed it Haughton's Landing. Hughton's Landing was a small fishing village that consisted only of his house and some barns and warehouses which he used for storage during the month he did not fish or sell goods at his store ashore. He also used his ship "Crescent" for transportation between Corpus Christi and Galveston Island during these times period . In 1868, Hughton's Landing was acquired by Jno Elisha Childress who renamed it Childress Bayou after himself and built several homes there including one known as "The Star". In 1889, Anna Ladd purchased property adjacent to Childress Bayou from Jno Elisha Childress for $1,000 cash with no consideration given for land or improvements which would be made thereto by her subsequent husband Wm Ladd III following their marriage in 1890. Anna later donated this land to the school district which named it Copperas Cove Elementary School before moving it to its present location in 1957-58 where it remains today as part of Hudspeth County Public Schools system

The first people to live in Copperas Cove were the Kansa and Dakota Sioux Indians, who arrived in 1847 fromMinnesota. The first school was founded in 1851 by Mrs. Hedgepeth and taught children from early morning until late night. In 1867, Copperas Cove had two stores and four cottages with a total population of twenty-one people. The first post office was established in 1870 by Mr. Fenton and named after Copperas Cove Creek which runs through it. In 1886, copper mining began on the nearby Mount Carmel Mine and soon large amounts of ore were being brought down to Copperas Cove for processing into coins or other products. By 1912, there were five businesses in town: one store, two mines (the Mount Carmel Mine and the Brazos Mine), two hotels (the First National Bank & Hotel and the Copperasa Hotel), a doctor’s office (Drury’s Drug Store) and thirteen families living together on Main Street. The onset of World War I led to an increase in production at the mine as well as an increase in prices for copper products throughout much of America due to supply shortages caused by war-relatedproduction quotas put into effect by President Wilson By 1925, when Prohibition was repealed,[1] Copperas Cove had only one store open which served liquor but no food; all remaining businesses had closed by that time too because prohibition made most businessowners unable to operate without government subsidies When statehood was granted to Texas on November 16th 1929,[2] Copperas Cove became part of what would become known as Cameron County As more residents move into larger towns within Cameron County such as Round Rock or Georgetown over time they tend to lose their artisanal build qualitycharacteristics that distinguish their villages/coves from more recent development..
Copperas Cove was founded in 1858 by James A. Copperas and his wife, Sarah. The Cove became a popular spot for fishing and sailing because of the rich copper deposits found there. In 1871, Copperas Cove was named after him and his wife.
