Crowley, Texas is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crowley was founded in 1881 by James Hogg and his brother-in-law Hiram Beasley. The name "Crowley" was chosen because it sounded like a crow's call. In 1903, Crowley incorporated as a village and named it after John Wesley Hardesty, who had been killed in an automobile accident two years earlier near Fort Worth. In 1907, Hardesty donated land to the town for a cemetery and post office. In 1912, Crowley built its first school on Old Slaughter Road east of present day US 69/75 (now FM 1491). The first teacher was Mrs. Anna Laddie Whitehurst from Denton County who taught until 1915 when she moved to Trinidad to be with her husband Rev. Drusilla Atherton Whitehurst (1863-1951).
