Denison, Texas is a small town in Weimar County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Denison community began as a small ranching village on the edge of what is now Denison. A post office was established in 1879 and by 1886 there were ten residents living in the hamlet. By 1905, there were twenty-one residents and six businesses. The townrand elevation increased from to when oil was discovered in Denison Township in 1911. Oil production began again around 1923 and within a few years the population had reached 500 people with nineteen businesses and one school. Petroleum production ceased after World War II but residential development continued until 2000 when it peaked with 343 occupants and thirty business owners. In recent years Denison has experienced growth due to its location within close proximity to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport as well as its status as an agricultural center for cattle feedlots located miles away from city limits or even rural areas. As early as 1955, plans called for expanding into apartment buildings but these plans never came to fruition because of low demand for housing near airports and other economic factors within Denison itself have led to some abandonment or redevelopment of older homes while others have been converted into apartments or condos over time providing more space for jobs and commerce adjacent to state highway 287 which bisects the town center lying east/west between downtownDallas/Ft Worth (on the north) and south/west between denison Rd./Hwy 287 (south), Loop 410 (west), FM 1920 (east)
