Desoto is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Desoto post office was first established in 1887. The name "Desoto" came from Spanish settlers who named it after their war-torn country of Mexico. The town's first store and hotel were built in 1892. By 1912, the community had 15 businesses and 375 residents! In 1916, Desoto began to annex parts of Round Rock Township so that its population would grow together rather than splitting apart during prohibition era separate growth rates (1st Ward annexed in 1915 and 4th Ward annexed in 1922). In 1954, Desoto became an independent municipality when it separated from Round Rock Township; however annexation into Williamson County continued until 1959 when all municipalities were consolidated into one entity under the new county government structure. Today, Desoto is home to both the Williamson County Courthouse Annexation Museum which displays artifacts from early local history as well as more recent courthouse construction projects such as the new court building just north of downtown which opened in 2014 In 1984, desotosiders erected a statue honoring their founder – James Aikens – on Main Street near his home. Aikens was born on November 12th 1865 and died on November 9th 1943 while serving with Company K 101st Cavalry Regiment during World War I; he is buried at Elmwood Cemetery south of town along with his wife Emma Craines Aiken (1868-1935), their children James Witherspoon Aiken (1920-2006) and Katherine “Kitty” Jane Aiken (born 1951) and grandchildren Johnnie Rayburn Aiken (born 1964), Tyrone Lamar Hillyard (born 1966), Darrell Earl Hillyard (born 1973) & Kimberly Lynn Hillyard(born 1979).

The town of Desoto, Texas is located in Starr County and was founded by Anglo- Mexican settlers in 1853. The first post office was established in 1854 and the first store opened in 1857. The town became a county seat in 1907 and was renamed Desoto after General Antonio López de Desoto, who fought during the Mexican-American War. In 1923, the United Statespost Office moved from Desoto to Brownsville due to population growth. In 1951, desegregation of public schools led to a high school segregation crisis inDesoto. On December 17, 1954, African American students at Desotos High School successfully sued their local school board for discrimination based on their race. The case went to court and ultimately resulted in desegregation of the schools; however, some residents continue to oppose this decision and maintain that they are still treated differently than white students. Today, Desoto is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, health care services, retail businesses and large Hispanic populations. It has been designated as a historical cultural center by the National Historical Preservation Foundation because of its significance within Texas history.

The first white people to arrive in Desoto, Texas were the Mexican Americans who came overland from San Antonio in 1836. The town was founded by Gabriel García Márquez and his family in 1839. The area that is now Desoto was part of the Alamo Rancho de Santa Anna. In 1845, a group of Texans led by Sam Houston set out from Austin to find new land for Texas. They discovered what is now Desoto and named it after their Chief, José María de la Boca y Costilla.
