This identification aroused interest among settlers who followed Del Rio's route through central Texas during their westward expansion into what is now eastern Oklahoma Territory. In 1835, General Sam Houston signed an order authorizing the erection of a military post at Prairie du Chien (later Fort Worth) on land granted by President James Kenedy to Major John Crainstall alias John Forbes to serve as commander-in-chief of all Indian Affairs operations in West Texas (present day Wichita Falls). On May 3, 1835 Houston issued another order giving authority for the construction at Prairie du Chien also of a fortification to be known as Post Oak Hill/Fort Rice: "And I appoint Colonel John Houstoun ... captain general commanding this post...." It should be noted that Post Oak Hill/Fort Rice would not become operational until October 25th due to problems with funding - it eventually did not exist at all when annexation occurred! Houston's orders empowered him "...to establish posts on both sides...northwest...and northeast...of Austin" - meaning that sites around today's DowntownDallas area were intended for later establishment including Elmendorf Air Force Base and today’s Star Wars Ranch! Tulsa entrepreneur George Waco donated land north of Interstate 45 between White Rock Rd./Pine Hollow Rd./Veterans Dr./Norman Way/Raymond Ave., just east of current Daytona Beach Boulevard NE., for a future military airfield serving TX & OK areas!
