By 1945, Duncanville had regained its lost ground with only 5% of its residents still living in agriculture while 50% lived within commuting distance to jobs inDallas or Fort Worth. In the early 1800s, Duncanville was a small town located in the present-day city of McAllen. The first white settler in Duncanville was J.F. Ladd who arrived in 1825. By 1830, there were only 10 residents living in the town. The first school opened in 1831 and was used by children from nearby villages. A post office was also established in Duncanville in 1835 and served the community until 1861 when it moved to McAllen. The population of Duncanville increased rapidly during the 1840s due to new transportation methods such as wagons and cattle trains that reached the area from Texas City on Frio River. In 1846, negotiations began for an railroad to be built through Duncanville connecting McAllen with Fort Worth via San Antonio. Construction began on December 3, 1847, and finished on May 15, 1850. The inaugural train journey arrived at its destination just after dark local time which made it possible for people in both cities to celebrate Christmas together without having to leave their homes! During World War II, Duncanville played a significant role as an airfield serving fighter planes from Air Force Base Holloman AFB northwest of town. During peacetime however, most of the military activity took place within McAllen or Fort Worth itself
