The railroad left Eagle Pass in 1903 to be replaced by the Southern Pacific Railway. Because it sits on a high plateau surrounded by rolling hills and mountains, Eagle Pass has been known for its views since early settlement began there. With so many people coming into town seeking opportunity came more crime rates as individuals found themselves competing for scarce resources like jobs and housing which along with attendant social unrest led to some very heated local elections that year: these gave rise to what would eventually become known as "The Town Hall Years" because all decisions made about city management or development were made through public hearings rather than taking any private action – something unheard of back then! 5 mayors served from 1907 thru 1954 including 3 held continuously thru 1962 (& 1 ex officio)!! Just think about all those committees & reports that went into effect just because our elected officials got their asses handed to them... seriously how times have changed!!! Eagle Pass, Texas was founded in 1859 by wagon train pioneers. The town began as a small trading post on the banks of the Frio River and quickly grew to become a commercial center for cattle and sheep drives. In 1865, Eagle Pass became the first town in Texas to be granted a charter from the Mexican government. By 1870, Eagle Pass had become an important transportation route between Mexico City and Texan towns near the river. The town also played an important role in helping to develop oil resources in northern Texas. In 1912, Hurricane Floyd destroyed much of northeastern Texas, including Eagle Pass; however, local businesses continued to operate until after the storm.
