Eagle Pass, Texas is a small town located in the county of El Paso, about 30 miles west of downtown Dallas. The population was 5,824 at the 2000 census and 6,443 as of the 2010 census. The name "Eagle Pass" is from the Apache word "aapach." The first European to visit Eagle Pass was Antonio de Escobar on July 24, 1540. He named it San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint, Mexico's most venerated prelate. In 1839 Eagle Pass became part of United States territory when Texas won independence from Mexico. The Mexican military garrisoned there stopped payment of severalributaries to General Santa Anna in 1846; these events led to Anglo-American rivalry over who would control this strategic crossroads between New Mexico and Arizona Territory. The US government leased land at Eagle Pass for ranching and mining purposes in 1881; this area now includes parts of El Paso County. A post office called Eagle Pass was established in 1886 by J.W. Mason; it continued operation until 1907. From 1912 through 1915 various airlines served EaglePass with passenger service including American Airlines and Pan American Airways (later Pan Am). In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson declared that all ceded Mexican lands east of the Rio Grande should become an open-air reservation known asthe Pueblo Lands Grant—the first such proclamation in US history (). These holdings included much of what is now El Paso County and parts ofancoast Texas today (). After World War II many residents left for industrial jobs throughout the USA while their families remained behind to farm or ranch (); some returned home during later years but many aspects of local culture have largely been lost over time (). Eagle Pass was founded in 1879 by two men who were looking for a place to set up a trading post. The post was abandoned after only a few months, and the men decided to build their own settlement. The first settler, James A. McClain, built a log cabin and named it "Eagle Pass". He also erected a stockade around his property to protect it from Indians. In 1881, another man, John Hetherington, established himself here and began trading goods with the Comanche and Kiowa people. By 1886, Eagle Pass had become an important center of trade in the region. In 1903, the US government acquired Eagle Pass as part of the Fort Worth Purchase of Texas. The decision to move the military base here was made because of its strategic location at the junction of several trails that connected ranching areas in east-central Texas. The fortification increased trade along those routes and helped make Eagle Pass one of the most important commercial centers in Texas during this time period. In 1907, control over Eagle Pass passed from McClain's heirs to Texas Rangers under Colonel John Wilyatt Tayloe. Here they continued to operate until 1917 when they were replaced by Texans led by Lieutenant General Phillip Sheridan Jr.. In 1920, during World War I (1914-1918), Eagle Pass was used as an airbase by American troops conducting strikes against German positions on Mexican soil within Mexico City without legal permission from Mexican authorities
