In 1978, affectionately called "Hollywood High" by locals, it reopened as community center after being condemned as an eyesore by then-Mayor Art Acevedo. In 1984, Houston Oilers quarterback Terrell Owens came to town for a night game against San Diego Chargers and took part in a Christmas parade that day which was televised nationwide. After Hurricane Ike hit Texas on November 5th 2008, many businesses closed due to damage or lack of insurance but Hollywood High reopened soon afterwards with help from donations from local residents.
