El Paso, Texas is known as the "Beltway of the Americas" because of its location on I-10 and its relationship with Mexico City. The city's history dates back to 1846 when it was founded by Colonel James W. Hogg as a trading post on the Rio Grande. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location and trade ties with both Mexico and Central America. In 1881, El Paso became an independent city and it remains one of the most important cities in Northern Mexico today. The first firearms manufactured in El Paso date back to 1853 when John Millington Wright began manufacturing rifles at his mill north of town. The weapons were made from buffalo hides that he had bought from Native Americans in what is now New Mexico. By 1860, Wright had turned his mill into a successful firearms company which continued manufacturing rifles until 1865 when American Civil War ended. In 1865, American forces burned down Wright's mill; however, he remained active in firearms production until his death in 1886. El Paso is a city in northwestern Texas, United States. The population was estimated at 953,817 as of July 1, 2017. It is the largest city in Texas and the county seat of Hudspeth County. The area now known as El Paso was part of the Nueces River valley before European settlement. The first permanent settlers were Mexican soldiers who arrived in 1846 to fight for Mexico against American forces during the Texan War of Independence. In 1867, the US Congress passed an act that designated Hudspeth County as a new county within Texas, which included all of what is now El Paso County. By 1920, El Paso had grown sufficiently to establish its own post office and build its first courthouse—the only one in Hudspeth County. In 1930, it annexed parts of Ciudad Juárez to become its second largest municipality and became one of few U S cities with a Hispanic majority (after New York City). In 1990, it lost its incorporated status but remains a city with jurisdiction over four rural villages: Chihuahua Heights-Edinburg; Coalton; Falcon Heights; and Playa Vista-Canyon Hills. As more English speakers settle in El Paso and other parts of Texas since then, Spanish surnames have begun to be replaced by English ones on average among citizens age 25 or younger. The economy of El Paso has been dominated by services since its establishment as an agricultural center following World War II. After years of economic stagnation beginning in the late 1990s due to factors such as rising costs associated with health care reform and technology investments elsewhere in TX., growth resumed through initiatives led by Mayor Jan Brewer (R) during her time as mayor from 2002 until 2006 . Growth has been supported by successive Republican mayors including Jerry Sanders (2006-2015), Greg Abbott (2015-present), Jeff Leakey (2003-2009), JoAnn Wenham (2002-2006) . As recently as 2000 about 60% of residents identified themselves either Catholic or Protestant while just 10% identified themselves as Latino/Hispanic

El Paso, Texas (commonly written as El Paso) is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Juárez County. The population was 693,812 at the 2010 census, making it the 12th-largest city in Texas and one of its six metropolitan areas. The name "El Paso" is Spanish for "The Pass". The area that now makes up El Paso was first settled by Native Americans in Prehistoric times. They were followed by Hispanic settlers who arrived in 1836, most of whom were Mexican American soldiers who had come to help fight General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican Revolution against Spain. After Santa Anna's defeat, many of these men, women and children fled south to El Paso County to find new homes. Many more came after US forces retook Mexico from Spain in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. In 1849, because Juárez County couldn't be divided between Mexico and Texas due to railroad construction at that time, a provisional government was set up in what is now downtown El Paso under Mayor Francisco César Chávez y Quiñones with help from United States citizens John Rourke and James Bowie. On October 15th this year – half a century after its incorporation – El Paso became an official city through an act of Congress on November 2nd 1915 via Senate Bill 592; also notable for being one day after four days of celebration across all five US states following World War I Armistice Day (November 11th). During the early years post-war there were few jobs available so many people went into prostitution or crime as a way to support themselves and their families until 1951 when Interstate 10 opened which created more opportunities for employment although still not enough for everyone living within walking distance of either downtown or local schools In recent years Downtown has been renovated/maintained while other parts have gone through various redevelopment efforts but no comprehensive plan has yet been released
El Paso was founded in 1847 by José Antonio Elías Peña and his wife doña María de la Concepción Chávez. The city's first post office opened in 1849. In 1853, the United States government established the Presidio of San Diego at El Paso as part of a military campaign to recover California from Mexican independenceists. By 1860, El Paso had become an important commercial center on the southern border of Texas. A number of Anglo-American businesses were established in the city during this time, including Bendix & Company, Bechtel Corporation, and Dodge Brothers No. 2 Emporium. In 1865, following Mexico's defeat in the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln ordered Ulysses S. Grant to annex Texas into the United States.
