The first settler in what is now Ennis was James Hogg who built a log cabin on the banks of the Trinity River in 1836. In 1840, Phebe Hunt and her husband William Hunt founded a farmstead called Hunt's Mill which still stands today on Third Street off Highway 183 near Interstate 35W and Elm Road. In 1849, John Aitken purchased land from the heirs of Alexander McKay for $200. He renamed his property Ennis after his birthplace in England (now London). The first post office opened in Ennis on November 15, 1850. By 1852, there were three stores and six homes in town. In 1861, Samuel Goode donated 365 acres (150 hectares) to the new Hudspeth County courthouse site where present-day Courthouse Square now stands. Goode also gave $1,000 to start an Agricultural Experiment Station in Hudspeth County which became known as the Goode Farm Institute today. On February 10, 1865 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest rallied Texans at Ennis for their Cause when he made an appearance before a crowd of about 1,500 people assembled to hear speeches by Governor James Fenton and Confederate General Robert Ewell from nearby San Antonio according to historian Don Armstrong: "Fornstall camped until 4 p..m., then marched 12 miles (19 kilometers) through hilly country...the men lost 14 killed and wounded while Antoine [Lafayette]withstood all with only one wound". Forrest adjourned his speech after lunch because it started raining hard outside; he then rode back into town en route back home to San Antonio before finally returning to his encampment north of town that night around 8 p..m.. That day saw one of history’s largest cavalry charges; more than 1 million soldiers under Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked Union forces under Major General Alfred Pleasonton at Allen’s Ford just south of Austin but wereantithreated by Forrest leading approximately 730 horsemen opposed to over 6 thousand infantry regulars led by Brigadier General John Sweeny commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Cushing with skirmishers firing from behind strong earthworks southeast of town culminating with 2 cannons being fired as signal for Bragg’s troopers not to charge further east but instead retire across Slaughter Creek bedding several miles away into open field beyond sight line range for support should any enemyierce them." The early settlers had many challenges including poor drainage conditions that caused periodic flooding streets turned into morasses so deep sometimes teams could not walk down them without assistance & farmers couldn't get enough daylight due provide fertilizer during summer months - this caused droughts throughout year Resulting increased crime rates & lack thereof productivity among residents
