Freeport grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of Galveston Bay and its access to shipping resources such as oil wells and gas pipelines. By 1940, Freeport had over 100 businesses employing over 5,000 people including a variety of industries including shipbuilding, fishing, manufacturing and construction. World War II brought about major changes to Freeport with the arrival of large numbers of soldiers stationed here for military service or for training during World War II known as "the war years". After World War II ended there were many fluctuations in Freeport's economy which led to it experiencing several occupations during the Korean Conflict before settling back into a more modest level of activity by the late 1960s when automobiles became common in townspeople' lives and began substituting for maritime activities such as fishing or commerce that had been abandoned since WWII; however no major restructuring or growth occurred until after Hurricane Ike hit Freeport on August 29th 2008 bringing significant economic damage along with devastating impacts to infrastructure which has required extensive repairs/replacement both physically & functionally since then; making it difficult for any new business ventures to take hold while repairing old infrastructure has essentially halted all economic development within town limits once again - much like Katrina did New Orleans prior thereto!
