In 1941, during World War II, parts of Japan were bombed by American bombers and resultant firebombing destroyed much of downtown Freeport including many businesses and homesdating back to pre-war days when Japanese nationals still resided in the area. Today's only building that escaped damage are some remaining warehouses dating back to early 20th century oil production days which include the old Gulf Oil Refinery(now located on I-10 just east of downtown) which is also home to various shops and restaurants filling up with locals every day during lunchtime for a unique view from atop their roof! Freeport has seen dramatic growth over recent years due in part to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas such as Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (just minutes away), Houston’s Minute Maid Park Stadium (home of college football’s Memorial Stadium) or Austin’s State Capitol Complex (home of state government).
