Georgetown was founded in 1827 by the Missouri Company as a trading post on the Texas side of the Rio Grande. The town grew quickly, and in 1859 it became the capital of the new Republic of Texas. In 1945, Georgetown was merged into Austin and is now one of the city's most popular tourist destinations. The town was first inhabited by Native Americans, who were displaced by white settlers in what is now north Austin. The area that would become Georgetown was originally known as San Jacinto because Spanish General Antonio de Santa Anna sent troops to attack Indian villages there in 1736. The name evolved from this origin when English settlers arrived in the area in 1827. The original Georgetown settlement consisted of a few buildings, including a jail and fortification system, which served as a base for traders and travelers traveling between Mexico City andTexas. By 1830, however, business had begun to grow rapidly at Georgetown thanks to its location at an important crossroads for trade with both Mexico and Central America. This growth prompted Washington Territory Commissioners to create additional districts within their jurisdiction in order to accommodate more businesses and people. In 1849, Congress passed an act creating Texan statehood; Accordingly, Washington Territory Authority ceased operations on July 1st that year and all land within it became part of Texas’ newly created republic. As Texans continued to settle throughout what is now central Austin (including present-day Georgetown), they built up their infrastructure around Georgetown: A courthouse was erected in 1856; a schoolhouse opened in 1865; a post office opened in 1870; and a railroad connection was made to Austin via Georgetown Station on November 8th, 1870. As commerce grew along with technological advancements such as railroads and automobiles becoming common across much of American society during this time period (particularly during Reconstruction after the American Civil War), so too did concerns about public safety arise at various locations throughout Texas due to increasing numbers of immigrants streaming intothe Lone Star State seeking opportunity and freedom from slavery or Jim Crow laws south ofthe border. In response to these challenges, elected officials began passing laws regulating immigration through regulation rather than open borders policy – something which would continue until well after World War II when discriminatory practices against certain ethnic groups became institutionalized nationwide through government policies

During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Georgetown served as an important stronghold for Mexico. After Mexico's defeat, many of its citizens fled to Texas. During Reconstruction in America following the American Civil War (1861-65), Georgetown became one of the most prosperous cities in Texas. However, it declined after Reconstruction ended and poverty characterized much of its population. In 1929, Georgetown suffered a major fire that destroyed over 60% of its buildings. The fire has been cited as one of the worst municipal disasters in American history. It is now a largely abandoned city with only a few small businesses remaining inside its boundaries
