Grapevine is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Brazos River. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Grapevine is part of the Houston–The Woodlands-Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grapevine began as a community on May 7, 1907 when brothers James and John Pritchett settled down near what is now downtown Grapevine. By 1914, grapevines were being grown throughout much of present-day Grapevine; one account said that “the vines had spread from their source in an area about two miles square to encompass twenty acres (8 km2).” The name of the original settlement suggests that grapevines were predominant: it means "grape" in Spanish and "vin" in French (a word meaning "wine"). In 1915, White Settlement No. 1 was built on land east of modern downtown Grapevine and became known as White Settlement #1 because white settlers first purchased land there. The town's first post office opened at 6:30 a.m., November 1, 1916 under the name White Settlement #2 (later changed to White Settlement #1). On February 20, 1948, it merged with neighbouring Friendswood to form the city of Friendswood annexed by Houston on December 15th of that year; however,Friendswood continued to function as an independent municipality until its annexation by Houston proper on January 3rd 1951 (). Houston annexed Friendswood because it saw fit due to continuing growth within Houston itself and its impact upon nearby communities such as Friendswood and Sugar Land which both experienced rapid growth during this time period without prior municipal incorporation – something which would become increasingly common over time as municipalities grew larger but did not have corresponding growth for their respective services or infrastructure). Grapevine, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 798 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Grapevine arrived from Arkansas in 1839. They were led by James Waddell and William Tatum. On October 11, 1840, Waddell and Tatum planted grape vines on what is now Prairie View A&M University's campus. In 1851, they built a sawmill on the Brazos River and started to sell wines and other refreshments. By 1861, their business had grown so much that they moved to a new location where they founded today's downtown district. The Battle of Grapevine was fought on September 16, 1862 near present day Grapevine as Union troops attempted an assault against Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg. Union forces were successful in pushing the Confederates back but lost many soldiers including Captain John Boudinot who later became Governor of Texas . The battle helped spur development around present day Grapevine with entrepreneurs starting businesses such as hotels and grocery stores along with developers building homes for wealthy Texans fleeing the Civil War . In 1905, entire Hudspeth County was absorbed into Austin when that city became one of several municipalities within the newly formed state of Texas . As Austin grew more populous and its municipal boundaries expanded northward into Travis County (now Houston), most notably through annexation of neighboring Live Oak Village in 1965 , southernmost portions of Hudspeth County – including much of downtown – continued to be served byHouston-based postal services until 1993 when all post offices within Travis County were consolidated into Austin proper
