In 1906, Drury School District No 9 erected a school building on land donated by Jerald Witherspoon which still stands today as Baylor University's first academic building north of campus. The first post office opened in 1887 inpresent-day Slaughtertown; however, the name was changed to Harker Heights six years later when the town became part of McLennan County.
