Henderson, Texas was founded on December 16, 1836 by the surveyor-general of Mexican America, Pedro de Mendoza. In 1845, a group of Texans led by John Denton petitioned President Polk to establish military posts in what is now Texas. On July 24, 1845, Polk approved the request and dispatched Captain James Fayette Worth with 400 soldiers to occupy Henderson and other nearby towns. The first white settlement in what is now Henderson County was established at White Sands in1846 by Kansas Territorial Governor Sam Houston. It later became part of Dallas County. In 1848, a school district was organized around White Sands and Henderson. In 1860, both towns were merged into Dallas County under new countyhood laws passed by Congress; however, they continued to be administered separately through their respective school districts until 1889 when they united under one single school board under Secretary of State James Kenedy II.
