In 1941, Henderson was incorporated as a city with a population exceeding 50,000 people and by 1968 had reached 100,000 people as the result of annexation by Austin following the passage of state law enjoining any municipality from annexing itself without approval from an elected governing body composed only of citizens over 25 years old who resided within its boundaries. Growth continued through annexation into other municipalities including Temple City between 1978 and 1984; Flower Mound between 1990 and 2000; Manor Park annexed by Henderson in 2006; Hermitage annexed by Austin in 2013; and Slaughtertown annexed by Austin in 2017. Henderson experienced significant growth following annexation due to its location near major transportation hubs such as Interstate 35W which provides access to both Austin and Dallas metro areas, two interstate highways that run through Johnson County, as well as easy access to schools, shopping malls, universities and hospitals all within minutes' walk or less from downtown Hendersonville overall. Henderson, Texas is located in Reeves County in the heart of the Lone Star State. The town was founded on December 12, 1859, by a group of farmers who came from Decatur County. Henderson quickly became a center for cattle and sheep production and its population grew to over 1,500 people by 1871. By 1907, Henderson had become a railroad hub with three railroads serving the area: the Union Pacific Railroad, the Santa Fe Railway, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Railway. The post office at Henderson opened on November 15, 1907. The first school in Henderson was built on Main Street in 1871. In 1912, the Howe School was built on East First Street and remained in use until it burned down in 1967. A new school was constructed on Second Street in 1909 and serve as the current Hendrickson Elementary School until it burned down in 1984. In 1916, Hutchinson High School was constructed across from First Baptist Church on West Broadway to serve students from Henderson as well as nearby towns such as White Settlement and Pecos City. The high school was renamed Harding High School after John W Harding (1869-1959), an early mayor of Henderson who donated land for the school site.
Henderson, Texas is a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,830 at the 2010 census. Henderson is the county seat of McLennan County. It lies on the Brazos River and its elevation is 653 feet (183 m). The first settlers in Henderson were farmers who arrived around 1836. A post office called Henderson was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The settlement of Henderson began as a cattle camp on the Brazos River. By 1860, there were more than seventy buildings within a mile of the town's center. In 1865, one vote showed that over eighty-five percent of voters wanted to incorporate as a city. On July 15th of that year, Mayor James Hinton proposed incorporation with a population of 3,500 people; however because no votes had been taken for incorporation yet, it became an ordinance effective only that day and did not take effect until August 12th when two more votes were cast to ratify it bylaws. In 1902–1903 construction began on what would become Houston's first major new airport which would eventually be known as Hobby Airport. The name "Henderson" came about because residents thought that if they named their city after someone other than themselves then they might get some recognition from visitors or tourists who might want to visitHouston but not know where to find them since most places named Houston either took credit for another person's work or just said Houston without any idea about what this meant (e.g., Tomball took credit for Sam Houston's work while Plano correctly spelled Tomball). So instead of giving up and calling their city something different like Austin or Dallas (the other two cities with similar names), they settled on Henderson because everyone knew about it already and no one wanted to start Name game with their own town again! Today there are multiple restaurants located throughout downtown including several high-end steak houses/restaurants along with several chains such as Dunkin' Donuts, Subway and Applebees among others making Henderson home to some pretty impressive culinary offerings!
