The first school in Hereford was built on the present site of the courthouse in 1886. After two years of construction, the school was dedicated and operational on December 3, 1886. In 1893, here also began regular passenger service between Austin and San Antonio with one stop at Hereford; this service ended when it merged with American Railroad Company's San Antonio–Austin Railway to form the Central Texas Railway Company (CTR). The first store opened in 1889 which became known as "The Prominence". In 1902, a new hotel called "The Hermitage" replaced "The Prominence". Up until then all hotels were named after prospectors or ranch hands who had contributed to their development or had helped furnish land for them; eventually only one hotel per town was allowed and that name changed to its current moniker—Hereford Hotel & Conference Center throughout most of its history other than during World War II when it changed back to its original name due to military hostilities against nearby Corpus Christi (and later Houston). In 1916 an airfield/pilot training School opened at Brushy Point Airport north of town which continued operations until 1959 when brushy point airport closed down due to lack of use and funding from local officials along with continuing USAF bombing raids which destroyed large parts of town including much of the building used for instruction purposes such as hangars etcetera . There are numerous explanations for why brushy point airport closed but no consensus has been reached although some believe that lack of funding may have been a factor as well as runway capacity being limitations caused by recent growth within Johnson County not capable of handling such high volumes even with larger planes like Concorde) . Although many businesses closed up shop during these days prior to Brushy Point Airport's closure there were still many people who commuted into town either driving or taking bus connections from various points around Johnson County everyday making it possible for many small businesses which would've gone out Of Business if airports like brushy point had continued operating .
