The first post office was established at Mission San Fernando Rey de las Palmas on July 8, 1865; it closed on December 20th that year because of low mail volume. A new post office opened at Hidalgo on January 3rd, 1886 under its present name which lasted until 1907 when it changed again to its present name with the arrival of the telegraph service. By 1900 there were over fifty businesses in downtown Hidalgo employing 695 people; most notably Jardin Gráfico Mexicano (Jardín Gráfico Mexicano), one of Southwestern Europe's largest department stores before World War II opened up shop there also starting out as a small time grocery store operating next to El Paso Plaza Boulevard across from City Hall from 1911-1915 before expanding across FM 1960 into what is now downtown Hialeah tonight serving more than 350 customers daily including 70% online shopping! In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the MexicanArmy to march on Texas. The Mexicans were met with a hostile reception and only after three months of hard fighting did they reach Texas. Santa Anna decided to move his army into Mexico City instead and awaited further orders from Emperor Charles IV. Meanwhile, the Texans had organized themselves into militias and driven the Mexican forces out of their land. On March 6, 1836, Texan General Sam Houston's force attacked Mexican troops near San Jacinto River. After a bloody battle that ensued, the Mexicans retreated back towards Mexico City. This event is considered the beginning of the American Civil War because it resulted in Mexico ceding some territory in Texas to America.
