Hidalgo, Texas is a small town located in Baylor County, Texas. The population was 1,830 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in that county and second most populous in McLennan County. Hidalgo is also home to Fort Hood Military Base and the McLennan County Fairgrounds. The first known inhabitants of Hidalgo were the Caddo people who lived on the banks of the Trinity River about 14 miles (22 kilometers) east of present-day Hialeah, Florida. They abandoned their village in 1836 when they were forced out by American forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1839, Joshua Lubbock founded what would become Hidalgo City on land he had purchased from Chiricahua Apache chief Tejan Tlaxcala. The town was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, commander of Mexican forces during the war against Mexico and later president of Mexico. Santa Anna arrived in Texas on November 5, 1840 with a force including 8 cannon and 3200 troops to help suppress an American revolt against his rule. He camped outside present-day Hialeah for two weeks before reaching Texarkana; from there he traveled by oxcart to San Antonio and then downriver to Houston where he entered into negotiations for independence from Mexico. On March 24, 1846, General Sam Houston married Maria del Carmen Escobar y Costilla at San Fernando Cathedral in Austin while supplies were being unloaded at Ship Channel Landing near modern day University Park because it was feared that Mexican forces might attack them while they were away from their homes. In 1850 Congress passed an act granting voting rights to Native Americans living within territorial boundaries; this act aroused resentment among Anglo Texans who saw themselves as rightful owners thereof.
