Humble, Texas is a small town in the Mexican state of Baja California. It is located on the San Marcos River, about 25 miles east of Mexicali and 12 miles south of Chihuahua City. The population was 7,000 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Humble was first settled by American Indians in 1795. The first European to see it was Juan de la Paz y Costilla, who named it San Marcos after his home country of Spain. In 1824, Don José Antonio Aguirre founded a rancho called La Purísima Concepción and started to grow maize there. He also built a mission called Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Rosario which served as a convent and school for local Indian children. The mission was destroyed by an Apache attack in 1836 but its ruins still stand today. In 1845, prospectors discovered oil shale near present-day Humble and began extracting it for fuel and lubrication during the Mexican Revolution (1865-1910). Famed Texan entrepreneur James Gilmore established Gilmore Oil Field in 1865 using these findings and soon became one of Mexico's leading petroleum producers. By 1920, he had developed more than 20 wells in Baja California alone; Humble was only one of their many outposts around this time.
