Irving is a small town in the state of Texas, located about 25 miles northeast of Austin. The population was 11,819 at the 2010 census. Prior to European settlement, what is now Irving was inhabited by the Wichita and other bison people. The area was first explored by Spanish missionaries in 1602, and it became part of Mexico in 1821 after independence from Spain. The name honor General James Fenton (1798-1868), who served as governor of Texas from 1840-1845 and as military governor during Mexican War (1846-48). By 1860, more than 175 businesses had established themselves in what is today Irving Village Center including 12 grocery stores, three furniture stores, four beer joints/bars/restaurants and six hotels/motels plus many smaller shops. In addition to its retail sector, Irving also experienced growth in agricultural production with large acreages devoted to cotton farming until around 1920; later becoming heavily oilfield dependent with major operations centered around Southwind Refinery where oil has been produced since 1938; currently operated by ExxonMobilTexaco Inc.). When World War II began on September 2nd 1939 local residents joined forces with El Paso County government to form proactively an all volunteer combat battalion known as “The Patriot” under Lt Col Harry Kramers which contributed materially towards Allied victory over Nazi Germany during WWII ending hostilities onMay 7th 1945 at Bremen Germany!
