After being founded by Texans who arrived in 1836 as part of what was then known as Anglo-American settlement in present day Collin County, Jacksonville quickly became an important town due to its location along navigable waterways and its close proximity to other counties in central Texas. Today, downtown Jacksonville features several blocks of shops and restaurants near the riverfront while older neighborhoods such as Old Town offerMall shopping experiences for those living within walking distance. In 1861, Jacksonville made national headlines when Confederate General Kirby Smith ordered his forces to burn all buildings in the community during a failed attempt to take control of Dallas over fears that northern sympathizers would join him if they learned about this effort. This event is also considered to be one of history's most dramatic moments because it helped spur support for Union efforts during the American Civil War. In 1865 after Houston seceded from Mexico and joined Texan independence movement under General Sam Houston - resulting in a war with US forces - Jacksonville sided with the Union side and burned all Confederate property including some remaining structures still standing today (such as Jackson Hall).
