Katy, Texas is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,048 at the 2010 census. The name Katy is derived from the Wichita word "k-a-t-y" meaning "place where they have been known to trade goods." The first settlers in what is now Katy were farmers who arrived during the 1820s. They named their community after James K. Polk, President of the United States at that time. The area around present day Katy was first drained by watercourses running through San Felipe and Tomball Counties in 1836. A post office called Katy was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1865, one of the founders of Houston offered $5 for every acre (1 hectare) of land sold within his city limits to create a township with its own government. As early as 1870, there were attempts to establish a school district hereabouts but no success resulted until 1875 when Waco businessman Johnnie Jones donated land for a public school which he also funded with private donations. In 1880, another Houston business man bought 5 acres near present day Uptown for $10 per acre (2 hectares). This parcel became known as Jacinto Road and remains so today. The largest single donation ever made to a municipal or countywide educational institution hereabouts came from J. Pemberton Moore II on October 25th 1906 when he contributed an initial sum of $25 thousand dollars to fund Brazosport College located just south of downtown Houston (now Sam Houston State University). On September 8th 1923 the General Assembly granted statehood to Hidalgo County and on November 3rd 1924/5 Rio Grande Highway officially became I-45 corridor connecting Harrisburg/Houston with Dallas/Fort Worth bypassing Amarillo thereby completing what had once been two separate localities – Katy and Whitney Park neighbors each other while Jacinto Road formed both their southern borders!
