Keller, Texas is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlers in Keller were John and Rebecca Keller who arrived in 1827 from Illinois. They built a cabin on the Arkansas River near what is now downtown Keller. In 1830, their son Samuel married Anna Shuler and they moved to what is now the east side of town. Over time it grew into a small town with a population of around 100 people by 1875 when its post office opened. The first school in Keller was open in 1881 and served grades one through four until 1930 when it became an elementary school. In 1925, the school board voted to name the new high school after Dr. Wm Hargrave who had been superintendent of public instruction for Midland County for many years before that. In 1938, Dr. Hargrave died and his wife Virginia took over as headmistress of the old high school which remained until its closure in 1966 due to budget cuts caused by World War II hysteria across all levels of education throughout Midland County
Keller, Texas was founded in 1879 by Moses Keller and James W. Caldwell. The town developed around a small cotton plantation and post office, which served the surrounding area until 1907. In that year, the Central Pacific Railroad built a line from San Francisco to Dallas, and Keller became the depot for the new line. The town continued to grow as local businesses catering to travelers began to open their doors, and in 1912 it incorporated as a city. By 1920, Keller had reached its peak population figure with over 100 residents. However, during the Great Depression many of the businesses closed down and Keller's population decreased again until it reached its low point in 1936 when only 10 residents remained.
