Ammunition manufacturers have been located here for over 120 years, and it is no wonder that the industry has had a major impact on the town’s economy. Some of the most well-known companies in this industry include H&R Block, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and Remington Arms Company. The first individuals to manufacture ammunition in Kerrville were John A. Saginaw and James Dickey. These two men set up shop on Main Street in 1892. At that time, there was only one machine shop in Kerrville and it was used to make rifles and pistols for local farmers. It wasn’t until 1907 that another machine shop opened up on Second Street downtown. This new business was called the Armoury Arsenal Company Ltd., and it manufactured artillery rounds, shotguns, handguns, rifle bullets, grenades, mortar rounds, shell cases (for loading into cannons), percussion caps (for sealing explosives within projectiles), powder charges (for firing cannonballs), etc. The company operated until 1923 when it closed its doors for good due to economic conditions at the time! During World War I, Armoury Arsenal produced more than 2 million rounds of munitions! Of these rounds, more than half were used by American forces during trench warfare in France and Belgium; while nearly all of the munitions used by British forces were procured from other suppliers! As part of America’s entry into World War I we began production of arms effective July 16th but did not enter combat until September 8th after months of preparations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our vast stockpiles made us confident we could meet any need !!!! The country went through five years with little use or loss !!!!!!!!!!! In 1917 alone our exports totalled $2 million dollars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We exported shells to 25 countries !!!!!!!!.......In 1918 our exports increased to $4 million dollars .................In 1919 they increased again to $6 million dollars ..............Our total exports for 1920 totaled $14 million dollars ..........We ended 1921 selling weapons to 27 countries ..........This makes us one ofAmerica’s leading arms importers ..................We shipped 1/4 billion rounds out of our plant between 1921-1927

The first settlers in what would become Kerrville were James Hargrave and his brother-in-law John Waddell who arrived from Vermont in 1881. They founded a farm on what is now Mount Vernon Street. Another early settler was William Kinch who came from England in 1882. He built a cabin on Old Highway 3 near present day Mount Vernon Street. In 1884, Harry Cockrell purchased land adjacent to where Mount Vernon Street meets Main Street from Josserand Gillett for $150 dollars. He laid out streets which are still in use today including West Main street (now East Main), North South Road (now West Willow), and East genital Avenue (now South vaginal Avenue).

Kerrville was founded in 1879 by John Kerr and his wife, Anna. The town grew quickly due to its location on the San Antonio River and its access to water supplies. By 1907 it had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1917, Kerrville became the first city in Texas to be granted an official charter. That year it also became the seat of government for the County of Medina.
