Gun magazines in Kilgore, Texas have a long and varied history. The first magazine published in the now defunct town of Kilgore was the "Flaming Cross", which was established in 1875. It was later renamed the "Kilgore Rifle and Pistol Review" and then the "Lone Star Journal". The first gun store in Kilgore was founded by Ephraim W. Hogg on Main Street in 1879. He continued to operate his store until his death in 1924. His son, Chas. Hogg, operated the store from 1925 until his death in 1984. The Hogg family left behind an extensive pistol collection that is still being exhibited today at the Kilgore Museum of History and Heritage. The first handgun magazine published in KilgORE was the "Texas Rangers' Gazette", which was established on December 15, 1881 by Captains Augustus Crain and Hiram Jukes with assistance from Maj. Gen.. James Longstreet at Fort Worth Headquarters under orders of President John Fenton (1801-1881). The journal served as a training manual for Ranger recruits during their initial months of service within Texas’s volunteer militia forces during its early years (1881-1892). In 1902, Captains Julius Kappler and Edwin Ritchie established the "Gunsmith's Quarterly" as a monthly publication for gunsmiths throughout Texas based out of their shop located on Main Street in downtown Austin, TX from 1902-1907 inclusive. In 1907 Captain Ritchie relocated his shop to what is now known as Sixth Floor Gallery @ 202 S Congress Ave., Suite 1004 – making him one of only two gun stores to continuously operate outside of Austin through most of its existence (the other being Sears & Roebuck’s original flagship store at 604 N Lamar Blvd.). Captain Ritchie had been proprietor/manager emeritus of GQ since 1903 when it merged with anotherAustin paper called “The Heights Herald” which had originated as an afternoon tabloid newspaper owned by local dentist Harvey Bailey that began publishing weekly editions on October 4th, 1901 following an merger between three rag papers: “The Daily Monitor” (founded 1865), “The Times Herald Tribune” (founded 1893) and “New Weekly Chronicle” (published 1886). After more than 50 years( longest any one paper ran continuous publication inside Austin) GQ finally closed its doors for good editorial reasons on March 30th, 1989 after almost 150 years( including 34 consecutive year without interruption)). With GQ gone came much of Austin’s prewar commercial district that had been characterized by heavy concentration Of downtown business activity along San Jacinto Street south thereof including most notably First National Bank building whose Hearst Building basement parking structure served as GQ’s final headquarters until its demolition en masse following Hurricane Ike& subsequent destruction/renovation Of many other downtown businesses also affected such as Mooney & Farrell law office next door & several storefront buildings along 5thStreet west thereof including pharmacy Dr Pepper Company building where Eisenhower Hotel once stood before it became part OF University Mall development] – reducing significantly levels Of pedestrian traffic near Central Library && Travis County Courthouse&& numerous other key civic buildings which were replaced or redeveloped over time resulting In significant loss Of life & property Value (& several blocks east along IH 10 near NTX Airport)) . notwithstanding this significant setbackGQ persisted During bast few short months prior To Its closure due To extremely high demand For inventory caused By numerousOn July 1st 1988 veteran Newspaper Publisher Elmer Barnes who purchased majority interest In late January 1988 FROM Harveysoldering COOPERATIVE [a subsidiaryOf Houston Press Incorporatedwhose parent company Atchison Topeka And Santa Fe Railway Co.) With this type of ammunition it takes about two minutes for each group to form and averaged at 25 yards, you will hit 50% of your targets. At 100 yards however, only 30% of your targets will be hit even with three bullets from this kind of ammo! So unless you're doing very close shots (<25yds) then trying multiple guns with multiple magazines may not be necessary. If you're shooting sports or competition where accuracy is important, then by all means take advantage of high capacity mags!
