The first European women who lived on La Marque Island were some Frenchwomen who came overland from Louisiana during the French Revolution. After the revolution ended, these women decided to stay in Texas and start a new life as women in an unknown land full of new opportunities. Eventually, more Spanish women also came overland from California, Florida, New Mexico and Arizona to live on La Marque Island when news reached them about American expansionism eastward into Mexico City where slavery was being practiced! In fact, one Spanish woman wrote home about her experiences living among " strange Americans" (Newcomb) exclaiming " I cannot believe my eyes; we are living among savages!" This early description helps us understand why so few Texans knew about this place before 1800!
