In 1932, La Porte, Texas became the first city in the United States to issue a regulation stipulating that all firearms must be unloaded and stored at home. The ordinance was enacted after several shootings within the city boundaries.
La Porte is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 917 at the 2010 census. La Porte is part of the Austin metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Bastrop County was made by refugees from (what is now) Kansas in 1871. They called themselves "the Kents". In 1876, James A. Hutchins and his family moved to the area and founded Hutchinsville on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. Hutchinsville grew into a small town with a post office and five stores. In 1898, James Hogg settled in what would become La Porte and built a cotton gin, mill, stockyards, and other commercial buildings which remain extant today as part of La Porte's downtown district. In 1906, LaPorte was named for George Washington Carver who had come to Texas during the American Civil War to help lead relief efforts for deserted slaves in Arkansas. In 1939, LaPorte became one of the towns annexed by Austin when it was created as an independent city by state law following the annexation of most of Travis County into Austin proper. As an annexing municipality, LaPorte made direct contributions to building up Austin's infrastructure including its original public schools (nowAustin High School), new police department headquarters (nowJoe Craft Federal Credit Union Building), and numerous other civic improvements that sprang up around the city over that time period including Zilker Park (now Domain Stadium), Lake Montero (now Barton Springs Pool), and much later Third Street Business Districts near Lamar University and Stemmons Freeway. Today much of downtownLaPorte remains largely unchanged from its early days with only minor updates/additions throughout decades; this along with its': mild climate makes it perfect for year-round living or short-term visits while still retaining many unique aspects which make it distinctively Texan - like its wide variety of outdoor activities such as hiking & biking trails along Buffalo Bayou or fishing inside Loop 360 Lake – making it one of only a few remaining truly rural American cities located within major metropolitan areas worldwide!

La Porte, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first post office in La Porte was established on December 12, 1872. LaPorte was named after General James H. Mason, who served as commanding general of the Department of Texas during the Mexican-American War and as captain of Company A, 10th Cavalry Regiment. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Santa Fe Railroad and its connections with North Central Railway (now CSX) freight trains that brought goods from Mexico City and other parts of Mexico to stores in Dallas and Fort Worth. In 1902, LaPorte became one of five townships organized into Midland County; it remained an independent municipality until 1959 when it merged with Arlington Heights to form Arlington Township. On February 26, 1907, a tornado touched down near La Porte and destroyed many homes and businesses; it remains one of the most severe tornadoes that have ever struck Texas. In 1940 Gail Borden married John Dickey in a private ceremony at her parents' home in LaPorte; they would later move to be near their son Jack Borden's baseball camp located south of town in Dripping Springs. That same year saw two major events take place withinLaPorte: first were local high school seniors who convened together for what is now known as "The Day Of The Sun" which demonstrated their opposition to racial discrimination against black students by white educators; secondly were four-day long celebrations surrounding World War II Victory over Japan which included parades throughout downtownLa Porte as well as BBQs and dances at several bars owned by military personnel stationed there
In 1845, La Porte was founded by the Texans and Mexican traders as a trading post on the A.F.L.R. (and later Texas) border. It became a town in 1848 and was named for General Manuel Armijo, who had come to La Porte to help fight Mexico's war of independence from Spain. The first school in La Porte was built in 1851, and the first store opened in 1853. In 1861, during the American Civil War, LaPorte became an important military base because it served as the eastern terminus of the Overland Mail route connecting New York City with California. After the war ended, La Porte declined until it regained its status as a town in 1949 when Interstate 10 was constructed through its area
