In 1971, after years of planning by city officials and citizens alike, Lake Jackson became an official U.S.-based international airport serving both Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and neighboring Fort Worth Airport (now Grapevine Regional Airport). At that time, it also served as one of only two major airports within 30 miles of all five major metropolises in North Texas – Dallas/Ft Worth; Austin-Round Rock;GPX; Amarillo; and Houston – making it an essential part of regional transportation for locals and visitors alike. Today’s economy depends heavily on air travel but also relies on agricultural production throughout much of Hinds County including rice farming around Clearwater Ranch Dam on the Arkansas River just west of town while corn farming takes place east of IH-35W between Temple Hills Blvd./Upper Wichita Rd./New Hope Rd./and FM 545 /Red Cedar Rd./Collins Ave.. The first settlements in the area that would become known as Lake Jackson were made by Spanish explorers in the early 1800s. By 1836, the Texas Rangers had started an organized campaign to eradicate Indian life from this part of the state, and by 1840 most of what is now Lake Jackson was within their jurisdiction. The town of Holly was founded in 1846 by settlers who traveled through Mexico on their way to Texas. Holly was a small trading post with a few buildings and a population of around 100 people. By 1850, the town had grown to over 1,000 people and it became the largest settlement on the lake. In 1865, Holly was destroyed by a severe storm that destroyed much of the village including its many buildings. In 1870, another small community called Cypress formed near where Holly had been situated just north of present-day Houston. This community grew rapidly due to its connections with both Houston and San Antonio and it soon boasted several multi-storey buildings and a population up to 500 people.
