Lakeway is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Dallas metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Lakeway were two brothers, John and Jesse Vaught. They came to the area in 1853 from Arkansas with their families. The name "Lakeway" was chosen because it resembled a large body of water that they had seen near their farmstead on the bank of the Trinity River. In 1872, a public road was built through rural Tarrant County and named after James Fenton, an early settler and president of Baylor University (now Baylor University Dallas). In honor of his donation to Baylor College of Medicine, which became Baylor School of Medicine in 1901 following its merger with Texas A&M University (now Texas Tech) – one of only two medical schools in America at that time – Fenton's Road was also called "Fenton Road." The post office at Lakeway was established on July 1, 1872; Vaught vacated his farm property for this purpose.
