Lakeway is a small town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Lakeway begins at an elevation of 348 feet (113 m). The community is located on FM 825 north-west of I-30 and west of US Highway 287. The name Lakeway comes from the Wichita Mountains to the east and the Comanche River to the west. In 1876, A.P. Hillyer named a creek after LK following his discovery of oil in that area while exploration for oil wells was being conducted by John Denton's company in nearby Arlington County. In 1912 Wm Hinton founded what became known as "Hinton's Hotel" which still stands today on Elm Street near US 287 and FM 825 northeast of I-30 northwest of Interstate 10."Historic Houston - History lesson: How Hinton's Hotel got its start", Houston Chronicle In 1914 Epperson opened what became known as "Epperson's Department Store". From 1915 until 1918 it was run by Jens Jensen who also operated several other stores in that era including "Moses Lake" on FM 527 south-west of town center and later "Fenwick's". Lakeway is a town in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Angelina County. The first permanent settler in what is now Lakeway was Levi Grimes who started his cabin on the banks of the Red River in 1836. The community was named after James H. Lake, an American politician and founder of Fort Worth.[1] In 1840, John Lubbock built a dam on the river and named it after him. A post office called Lakeside was established in 1845,[2] and remained open until 1907.[3] By 1856, over 100 settlers had arrived in what would become Angelina County. The first store opened in that year at 4th and Elm streets by Wm Fenton and Jno Bessinger[4]. In 1865, General Zachary Taylor founded Camp Dallas near present-day Richardson to house Union troops during the American Civil War. The camp became known as Camp Austin because General Taylor's headquarters were located there from 1865 to 1868. With its new location came new opportunities for business development including a hotel, grocery store and cotton gin among others.[5][6][7] In 1870s nearby Temple (later renamed Temple University) began attracting students from all over Texas due to its excellent education opportunities as well as its proximity to Fort Worth. This growth led to increased competition for businesses between Temple University and Fort Worth businesses which led to the founding of a city hall committee in 1893 which recommended naminglakewaythenewcapitalofTexasin 1890[8]. That same year also saw the opening of Baylor College Medical School with professors Drs Asa Mayo and Edmund Sanger which helped create an agricultural center east of downtown Fort Worth[9]. According to some reports, by 1900 only 10% of Angelina County residents could read or write while 80% were farmers or ranch hands; around this time lakeway's population reached 2,000 people making it one of America’s fastest growing towns during that period[]). In 1954 old Alma Welles Dry Goods Store on 6th Street was razed due To numerous fire threats but later foundry building erected next door used as warehouse before being destroyed []). The first white people to live in what is now Lakeway were the Comanches. The area was first explored by Captain James Fenton during his 1821 Expedition, and he named the stream after General Santa Anna. A post office was established at the current site of Lakeway on July 1, 1836, and operations began under the name of Fort Bend County. In 1850, a county seat was established at Lakeway, and it remained so for most of its history. In 1861, as Texas prepared for secession from the Union, Confederate forces attacked a small detachment of Union soldiers near present-day Lakeway. Five men were killed and twenty-one captured; this event is generally considered to be the start of significant conflict between Texans and Confederates in that area. The Battle of Elmendorf Heights saw more Casualties on both sides than any other battle in Texas during the war. In 1871, voters confirmed an election by popular votedesignating Houston as their new county seat. Houston became one of the thirty-six counties in Texas when it was created on February 3, 1901. On November 5th, 1915 elections yielded them two Republicans (Edwin Edwards and Aubrey McClendon) as county commissioners while all other Democrats were abolished within one day due to term limits set by then-Governor Connally which would have given future Republican Commissioners into effect until 2020 had they not been disqualified because they did not receive two thirds majority vote from each party organization before their expiration date; however this did not stop many Independent Party members from running against Democratic Commissioners despite having no chance at winning since these seats could still be filled with tiered patronage appointments instead like they are currently with current Commissioners being elected through partisan primaries). On January 15th 1929 Mexican bandits raided a grocery store located south east of town taking four local employees plus provisions for themselves including flour for reported bandit activity along IH 10 near present day Spring Branch just northwest of town Limits Roadstead housing development today known as Canogas Ranch approximately 6 miles west southwest (Lakeway Boulevard east side)of present day Spring Branch
